Post-Engagement Ring Protection Plan

It's a yes!! But before you begin planning the marital festivities in earnest, let's not forget the ring that made it all happen: an often-overlooked part of owning a valuable ring is the aftercare to make sure it stays perfect for years to come.

It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning post-proposal, so we did all the work of putting together all the resources you'll need to make sure your engagement ring is well taken care of.

Insure It

As with everything in your life, it's important to make sure that everything of value is covered with some type of insurance. Don't forget that your engagement jewelry, as well as your bridal set, should also be insured. Jewelry insurance is available in four main ways: under a homeowner’s or renter’s policy, through the homeowner’s or renter’s policy with a jewelry addition, as a specific property policy, or through a specialized jewelry policy. But instead of complicating things, here's what Nick recommends through his decades of experience.

First, you have to get the jewelry appraised (and Nick recommends every 5 years): in the San Francisco Bay Area, our go to rec's for our customers are GemData and Watson & Son based on excellent service. The important classification for an appraiser is to be GIA Certified. If they don't have it, in the words of Nick, "they're just making sh*t up".

For insurance, we highly recommend Jeweler's Mutual for many reasons, but primarily for its robust standalone policy. This way, your rings won't affect any part of your other insurance policies while giving you excellent coverage on your jewelry. We've had many customers file claims through JM without a hitch and were able to repair or remake rings through their settlement.

Wear It

Nick gets sad when people don't wear his engagement rings. He told me not to write that but I'm going to put it in.

But he's got a point: for such a prized piece of art from your loved one, why wouldn't you want to remind yourself of that memory? Also, there's the added benefit of knowing where it is - and therefore not being able to lose it. More often than not, customer's lose their rings when they're not familiar with having the feeling of the ring on their finger.

A designated space for your rings in your jewelry box or safe is highly recommended: this way, you can dress yourself quickly or, in the worst case scenario, report it as quickly as possible to the authorities.

The exceptions are when doing physical activities or going on vacation: sweat and grime can muddy the shine of the ring, while wedding jewelry is a hot ticket for international thieves everywhere. For these moments, you can either place it in that safe space OR buy a replica ring to give you peace of mind.

One final note - best to avoid harsh chemicals like bleach and hand sanitizer while wearing the ring. In many cases, the damage can be reversed with a professional cleaning, but why risk it?

Clean It

Following up on that last note, regular ring cleaning should be part of your jewelry protocol: just like you clean your car and windshield to feel good about yourself, cleaning your diamonds and gold will make you feel even better about yourself. A professional cleaning can wipe away the chemicals and grime to remind it of the very first day it was on your finger.

Based on your level of wear, Nick recommends a professional cleaning every 6-12 months.

Did we mention: If you buy a ring from us, you get free ring cleanings FOR LIFE. That means we'll be scrubbin' for you til death do us part.

Appreciate It

It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our day to day that we forget the simple things.

If you have an engagement ring, someone loves you! Enough for them to commit to you for the rest of their lives. And, to top it all off, placed a timeless piece of art on your finger to seal the deal.

Appreciating what your ring stands for regularly is a beautiful way to practice gratitude, treasure the important people and moments in your life, and evaluate if you need to come into our shop for a repair.

Which, by the way, is also FREE if Nick made it for you in our shop. Seriously, we take care of y'all because we love y'all.
